Germany’s metalworking industry has roots reaching as far back as the Industrial Revolution. The sector supports essential industries, including construction, automotive, electrical and mechanical engineering. In 2023, the industry recorded a total turnover of €142.99 billion, a 22.32% increase from the previous year. The industry’s backbone remains the country’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which make up the majority of the 715 companies that are currently operating in the sector. These firms employ around 228,000 individuals, a slight increase from previous years, which signifies a recovery from the 2020 slump. Leading players such as Thyssenkrupp, and Aurubis are key contributors, while North Rhine-Westphalia stands out as the state with the highest industry turnover. The German metalworking industry is segmented into various compartments: non-ferrous metals, ferroalloy, foundry, and steelworking. In 2023, non-ferrous metals led the industry’s revenue, generating €51.6 billion, while the production of pig iron, steel, and foundry production earned €15.9 billion. Steel tube production and other iron and steel processing also generated €7.8 billion and €7.7 billion, respectively. However, Germany’s metalworking industry faces mounting pressure from international competitors, particularly from Asia, pushing German companies to innovate continuously. This drive for specialisation is crucial for maintaining competitiveness, especially as global supply chains become more complex and sustainability demands rise. In response, German firms are expanding their product ranges and investing in advanced technologies, including AI and automation, to streamline production and improve material efficiency. Notably, the foundry sector, with 259 companies, comprises the largest number of firms within the metalworking industry. Despite its size, the foundry sector generates lower turnover than the non-ferrous metals and ferroalloy segments, which continue to dominate in terms of revenue. This dynamic highlights the industry’s diverse structure and the varying profitability across different metalworking fields.
