Germany’s logistics and transportation market, currently valued at $213.8 billion in 2024, is looking at an encouraging forecast with projections estimating a market size of $257 billion by 2030. As one of Europe’s largest logistics markets, Germany is investing heavily in sustainable technologies, digital transformation, and expanding its e-commerce infrastructure. The country’s focus on efficiency and sustainability has been evident in recent developments across multiple modes of transportation, including air, road, and courier services. In February 2024, DHL and Fraport AG, the company overseeing Frankfurt Airport, broke ground on a state-of-the-art air freight facility at CargoCity South. This 55,000-square-metre project is set to enhance Germany’s air freight capabilities, with completion expected by mid-2025. With a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.51% from 2024 to 2030, air freight is one of the fastest-growing sectors within Germany’s logistics market. Frankfurt Airport’s expansion highlights the importance of air cargo for the country, particularly for time-sensitive shipments like pharmaceuticals and electronics. The increased capacity will enable Germany to handle a greater volume of international and domestic freight. The e-commerce sector in Germany continues to be a major driver of growth for the logistics and transportation industry as it expands the domestic courier, express, and parcel (CEP) market. In 2023, the country’s e-commerce market grew by 7.8% year-over-year, reaching $108.8 billion. This rapid growth has created a strong demand for CEP services, which are expected to outpace overall market growth until 2027. During the holiday season in November and December 2022, Germany’s parcel service providers handled 725 million shipments, with private residences accounting for approximately 395 million of these parcels. The rise of e-commerce has catalysed the need for efficient last-mile delivery solutions. DHL, along with other courier giants, is enhancing its infrastructure to manage peak periods and increase delivery capacity.
