Germany’s medical equipment industry ranks third in the world behind only the United States and Japan. The country’s medical technology market is the largest in Europe, contributing roughly $42 billion annually and representing 25% of the total European market. Germany’s healthcare system is highly developed, with exceptional infrastructure, including a large number of hospital beds and trained medical professionals. One in every six jobs in Germany is linked to the healthcare sector, which generates an economic impact of €775 billion, or approximately 12% of the country's GDP. In 2022, the healthcare sector contributed a gross value of €439.6 billion, employed nearly 8.1 million people, and accounted for 17.7% of the total workforce. This large workforce and economic footprint highlight the central role of healthcare in the German economy, with the medical equipment industry playing a particularly important role in terms of both innovation and exports. The German medical equipment industry is not only influential domestically but also on the global stage. In 2022, Germany's healthcare exports reached €186 billion, contributing 9.8% to the nation’s total exports, while healthcare imports stood at €154 billion. One of the key growth factors for Germany’s medical equipment industry is the ongoing digitisation of healthcare. The Hospital Future Act, enacted in October 2020, is driving significant investments in the modernization of the German hospital system. This legislation provides €3 billion in federal funding, with an additional €1.3 billion from state governments, to modernise and digitise hospital infrastructure. This investment aims to tackle the double-digit investment backlog in the hospital sector, enhancing the efficiency and quality of care. Digital health technologies, such as telemedicine, remote monitoring, and artificial intelligence, are becoming increasingly integrated into the healthcare landscape. These advancements are expected to boost the demand for high-tech medical devices and support further growth in the sector.
