Germany’s fishing industry has long been a significant player in the nation's economy, contributing to both domestic consumption and international trade. In 2018, Germany produced 0.3 million tonnes of fish, which were valued at USD 467.1 million. Aquaculture accounted for 29% of this value, while fisheries contributed 71%. Despite a slight decrease in production quantity between 2008 and 2018, the value of production saw a modest increase of 2%. Germany remains a net importer of fish and fish products and imports increased by 22% between 2008 and 2018, which has greatly outpaced the growth in exports. The seafood sector, including processing, provided 2,424 jobs in 2018, which represented a 31% decrease compared to 2008. However, the average value of production per employee increased by 55% in marine fisheries and 22% in aquaculture over the same period. This speaks to improved productivity through the adoption of new technologies and practices. The fleet saw a reduction in the number of powered vessels by 27% since 2008 with small-scale vessels below 12 meters in length comprising the majority. Despite the decrease in vessel numbers, the total gross tonnage of the German fleet remained relatively stable. Governments play a crucial role in supporting the fisheries sector through various policies aimed at maintaining employment, improving welfare and ensuring sustainability. In 2018, Germany allocated EUR 14.7 million for financing services to the fisheries sector. However, the absence of recouped costs via charges and fees highlights a potential area for improvement in cost recovery mechanisms. As the fishing industry faces sustainability challenges, there is a growing emphasis on innovation and responsible practices. Germany has an opportunity to invest in research and development to promote sustainable fishing methods and resource management, thereby ensuring the long-term viability of the sector.
