To this day, Germany commands one of the biggest defense and security sectors on the continent. Nevertheless, the country has found itself in an unenviable position against a backdrop of massive conflicts with a fleet that’s behind the times. Germany’s security industry faces challenges on the modernization front. The German government has inflated its defense spending budget on much needed upgrades as a substantial portion of its fleet requires updates and its platforms near the end of their operational lifespan. The modernization efforts span various domains with major ongoing procurement programs taking center stage. These include the New Generation Fighter, Future Combat Air System, Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 4, and the F-35A. Several defense companies contribute to Germany’s modernization efforts. We have Deutsche Telekom AG, Siemens AG, ThyssenKrupp AG, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, SAP SE, Dassault Aviation SA, Lockheed Martin Corp and Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH at the forefront of this massive rejuvenation of Germany’s security industry. Dassault Aviation SA, massive in the manufacturing of combat aircraft and business jets, provides military aircraft under brands like Rafale and Mirage. Germany boasts the third-largest aerospace and defense market in Europe. Revenues reached USD 41.1 billion in 2022 with close to three-quarters of its production (around USD 30 billion) being exported. The export success is largely attributed to Airbus, which leverages intra-company trade within its geographically dispersed production model across Germany and France. Dr. Schöllhorn, President of BDLI, emphasized that aerospace positions Germany and Europe as world leaders. With future-focused projects like the ZEROe aircraft, Future Combat Air System (FCAS), and the European Service Module (ESM) for the Artemis mission, Germany aims not only to complete the modernization of its fleet, but reassert its position within the global defense and security industry. There are many uncertainties going forward, but the German government has taken the necessary steps to remain Europe’s chief protector.
