Spain’s metalworking industry is expected to stay on an upward trajectory with revenue expected to hit approximately €9.6 billion by 2028. This will be a marked increase from the current €8.6 billion in 2023. This consistent expansion, with an estimated annual growth rate of 1.7%, marks the industry as a safe, stable sector given the current complicated global economic context. Over the past decade, Spain's metal sector has grown at a steady rate of around 1% annually, which secures it the fourth spot in Europe behind Italy, France, and Germany. Contributing around 8% to Spain’s GDP, the metalworking industry plays a crucial role not only within its own sector but also as a backbone for many industries that rely on metal components from automotive manufacturing to construction and infrastructure projects. Confemetal, Spain’s primary metal industry association, highlights this influence in its recent Metal Industry Map. Although Spain’s metalworking industry shows promise, it faces substantial obstacles. The production figures for March 2023 showed a 3.6% decrease, which decidedly reversed a 2.6% gain from February. This downturn has largely been attributed to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has disrupted both raw material supply chains and production schedules. Additionally, the Metal Industry Turnover Index recorded a decline of 0.7% in March, a marked drop following February’s 9.9% growth. Such fluctuations indicate the sensitivity of Spain's metal sector to international market changes. Nevertheless, Spain's metal industry remains optimistic about future growth. The projected increase in revenues over the next five years reflects a strategic focus on innovation and efficiency. Spanish companies are increasingly investing in advanced manufacturing techniques, such as automation and digitalization to streamline operations and reduce dependency on external factors.
