Germany continuously invests in R&D to the point it’s become one of Europe’s leading forces in the field of micro and nano technology. The most recent R&D budget is roughly 3.14% of its $4.259 trillion GDP. German research institutions consistently push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. In 2022, a team at the University of Kassel made a significant breakthrough in microscopy by elucidating the mechanisms behind enhanced resolution when using transparent microspheres. This discovery, published in the Journal of Optical Microsystems, has profound implications for the examination of delicate biological samples. Germany boasts a thriving academic ecosystem dedicated to nanotechnology research. Over 700 research groups and university departments are actively engaged in this field, with a strong emphasis on materials science. First we have the Technische University Dresden, which is ranked among the top 82 global institutions in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The university excels in quantitative methods and the development of novel strategies for exploiting nanoscale phenomena in areas such as nanomechanics and nanoelectronics. Then there is the Center for Applied Nanotechnology, which bridges the gap between academia and industry, and provides contract research and development services to both. Their projects span diverse areas, including the development of advanced energy storage solutions and the development of innovative diagnostic tools for diseases like diabetes. The private sector is a key driver of innovation within the micro and nanotechnology industry in Germany. Leon-nanodrugs, a leading pharmaceutical company, recently announced a groundbreaking development; namely a novel reactor for the production of lipid nanoparticles. This technology, crucial for encapsulating mRNA and active pharmaceutical ingredients, holds immense potential for advancing research in the biopharmaceutical sector, particularly in the field of genetics. That’s only one company! The remainder of the German ecosystem is just as impressive and forward-thinking.
