Germany has cemented its position as a global leader in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, with one of the largest ICT markets worldwide and the largest software market in Europe. As of 2023, the country is home to approximately 100,000 IT companies employing over 1.18 million people. The steady growth of the sector is reflected in its total revenue, which has grown from USD 76.4 billion in 2007 to USD 141.6 billion in 2023. The IT technology industry in Germany is characterised by a mix of domestic and international players. Major US tech giants such as Microsoft, Apple, Dell, and IBM, as well as local industry leaders like SAP, have a significant market share. Demand for US products and services remains robust across various segments, particularly in IT services, hardware, and software. In 2022, revenue from IT services accounted for USD 45.3 billion, followed by USD 34.9 billion from hardware and USD 34.1 billion from the software subsector. Germany is not only a key player in the ICT market but also a global marketplace for innovation, hosting numerous international trade shows that attract buyers and exhibitors from around the world. Events such as Hannover Messe, IFA Berlin, Gamescom, and IT-SA serve as critical platforms for US companies to reach global partners and customers. Germany has placed the IT technology industry at the heart of its Digital Agenda, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The agenda aims to strengthen the digital economy, improve digital infrastructure, promote digital workplaces, and foster innovation in governance and education. A key focus is on enhancing cybersecurity, with Germany aiming to fortify its digital defences as part of its National Digital Strategy 2025. This strategy outlines a 10-year plan to drive digital transformation across industries and government sectors.
