The German printing industry experiences the drawback of digitalization, which continuously erodes demand for traditional print products. Between 2019 and 2024, industry revenue has declined at an average annual rate of 5.9%, with turnover expected to fall further by 4.5% in 2024, reaching approximately 9.3 billion euros. The primary driver behind this decline is the shift in consumer preferences toward digital media, which has greatly impacted magazine and book production. The decreasing demand for print publications is particularly evident in the book and magazine sector, where more readers are opting for e-books and online content. Consumer spending patterns have also contributed to this downturn, with rising prices discouraging expenditures on non-essential print products such as magazines. However, while traditional print media continues to struggle, other segments of the industry, such as label and packaging printing, have experienced relative stability. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the decline in print orders for advertising materials, as businesses reduced marketing budgets. However, the spike in e-commerce provided a lifeline to print shops specializing in labels and packaging, which benefited from increased demand for product labeling and shipping materials. Looking ahead, industry analysts predict that the German printing industry will continue its downward trajectory, with revenue forecasted to decline by an average of 1.4% per year between 2024 and 2029. By 2029, the industry is expected to generate only 8.7 billion euros in revenue. This prolonged downturn is likely to result in market overcapacity and further lead to further closures of printing companies unable to adapt to changing market conditions. Challenges aside, the German printing industry remains diverse. Promotional materials are still the largest revenue source, particularly in retail, where printed advertising continues to play an active role in consumer engagement. Geographically, the central and southern regions of Germany see the highest demand for media and advertising printing.
