The hospitality industry in Germany has long been a pillar of the country's tourism sector. According to the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA), the accommodation industry plays a vital role alongside commercial catering as it offers travelers a variety of options to suit their needs and preferences. In recent years, the German hospitality industry has experienced steady revenue growth, which was interrupted only during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Despite this market freeze, there are currently approximately 48,400 operational accommodation establishments across Germany that cater to domestic and international travelers. In 2022, the industry recorded around 450.8 million overnight stays. Cities like Berlin have emerged as key destinations for international travelers with millions of foreign guests traveling to the capital each year. In 2021 alone, Berlin welcomed around 4 million foreign visitors, which amounted to a total of 14 million overnight stays. Hotels remain the most popular choice for accommodation with around 173.2 million hotel overnight stays recorded in 2022. Among hotels, those with 30 to 99 beds are the most prevalent in the German market. While the industry continues to recover from the impact of travel restrictions imposed during the pandemic, it also faces additional challenges such as rising energy costs and inflation. These factors add complexity to the operating environment for accommodation providers, requiring strategic adaptation to maintain profitability and sustainability. There has also been a notable increase in the penetration of international hotel brands in the German market. The rise of international chains, coupled with mergers and acquisitions, has led to significant growth in the sector. Brands like IHG have announced ambitious expansion plans, aiming to double their presence in Germany with the addition of new properties. This trend underscores the growing competitiveness and attractiveness of the German hospitality market to global players.
