Germany has long been a leader in the shift towards a circular economy, thanks to its progressive policies, strong industrial base, and innovative capabilities within its environment and waste management industry. This focus on resource efficiency and waste reduction not only positions Germany as a pioneer in sustainable development but also opens up new business opportunities, creates jobs, and provides significant environmental benefits. A key segment gaining momentum in Germany’s circular economy is the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The European car industry is undergoing a rapid transformation with significant growth in the sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). By 2030, the share of BEV and PHEV sales is expected to surpass 50 percent of total vehicle sales. This shift towards electrification is driven by both consumer demand for greener alternatives and stringent regulatory measures aimed at reducing carbon emissions. However, the rise in EV adoption presents new challenges, particularly concerning the end-of-life treatment of lithium-ion batteries. These batteries contain valuable materials such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, and lithium, which are finite and predominantly sourced from a few countries. As EV growth accelerates, the demand for these materials will likely outstrip supply. Recycling lithium-ion batteries is crucial to addressing raw material shortages and establishing a sustainable circular battery supply chain. Germany’s now developing and implementing recycling technologies that can recover these precious materials from used batteries, becoming a strong, new branch of Germany’s environment and waste management industry. The EU battery regulation is a significant driver for the battery recycling market in Germany. This comprehensive legislation covers the entire battery life cycle and includes several measures designed to promote a circular economy. Key elements of the regulation include digital battery passports, stricter waste collection targets, recovery targets and recycled content requirements.
