The COVID-19 pandemic has left a permanent mark on the sports and fitness industry that still exerts influence on major trends to this day. First, we have to go back to 2020 and the initial lockdowns, which forced gyms to lose down. Now that people couldn’t leave their homes, the industry had to adapt or face decline. The response was swift and innovative as online training, home gym setups and a stronger focus on health beyond just physical appearance rose to prominence. Digital fitness only gained traction throughout 2021 and 2022, fundamentally changing how people engage with exercise. The convenience of working out from home and the variety of online formats, whether it be live classes or on-demand sessions, helped maintain fitness routines amid ongoing restrictions. Even when the world gradually reopens, these digital habits are not simply fading away but evolving into hybrid models that combine the best of both virtual and in-person experiences. One of the biggest trends shaping the sports and fitness industry today is the rapid advancement and adoption of fitness wearables. Originally popularized by the Fitbit in 2009, fitness trackers have evolved far beyond simple step counting. Modern devices, such as the Oura Ring and Apple Watch, now provide in-depth health monitoring, tracking metrics like blood oxygen levels, stress hormone responses, and detailed sleep quality. These wearables have built on top of basic data collection to offeri users personalized insights and actionable advice. A key example here is sleep hygiene and improvement based on sleep tracking. The fitness tracker market is expected to reach $114.36 billion by 2028. In fact, the American College of Sports Medicine named fitness wearables the number one fitness trend for 2024, highlighting their central role in the future of personal health and performance monitoring.
