The renewable energies industry has received a massive boost on an international level from high-level policy, increased demand and technological leaps that put the global capacity for renewable power generation on an unprecedented fast track. This rapid growth is set to position renewable energy as the world's top source of electricity by 2025, surpassing coal. By 2028, 68 countries will have renewables as their primary source of power. This swift acceleration in clean energy production is timely and addresses urgent concerns among policymakers and climate advocates about the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. The transition not only promises to mitigate climate change but also to drive significant advancements in decarbonization efforts globally. The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) marked a pivotal moment for global energy policies. Governments worldwide committed to tripling global renewables power capacity by 2030. This perhaps overwhelming goal is seen as crucial for mitigating climate change, advancing decarbonization, and achieving net-zero emissions. While the technology base is there, policy is going to be the deciding factor for the future of the renewable energy industry. To support the development of renewable energy technologies, various public policy measures have been implemented across the globe. The European Union’s Green Deal Industrial Plan, India’s Production Linked Incentives (PLI), and the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are designed to stimulate the integration of sustainable energy. In China, supportive economic policies have accelerated the development of onshore wind and solar PV projects, enabling the country to surpass its national 2030 targets years ahead of schedule. China’s progress is particularly significant as it accounts for nearly 60% of all new global renewable energy capacity expected to come online by 2028. The evolving landscape of corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives is also playing a pivotal role in driving demand for renewable energy in the private sector.
