Düsseldorf has long been a pivotal location for the security industry in Western Germany due to it being the headquarters of Rheinmetall Landsysteme, the country’s largest manufacturer of tanks and combat vehicles. The Ruhr region has previously been a center for weapons production of big significance within the country, but manufacturing slowed down significantly over the decades. Today, Düsseldorf’s security industry is characterized by hosting key supplier companies. The city itself is less and less associated with defense and security. Nevertheless, Rheinmetall continues the city’s legacy. In 2022, Rheinmetall generated a total of €6.41 billion in sales with an employee strength of 25,486. This marked growth from the preceding year and reinforced the company’s position as the largest defense company in Germany and the 5th-largest in Europe. As of March 20, 2023, Rheinmetall is listed in the German DAX share index. Rheinmetall, although primarily focused on vehicles, has branched out over the years and has since made a variety of contributions to the defense sector. The Vehicle Systems divisions, in Europe and internationally, pull far ahead of the competition in the development of wheeled and tracked military vehicles. The Weapon and Ammunition division focuses on advanced weapon systems and ammunition, while the Electronic Solutions division pioneers digital solutions for armed forces, infantry equipment, air defense and simulation. The company heavily pursues innovation in order to remain in step with the changing nature of modern warfare, which led to the creation of its Electronic Solutions division in the first place. Additionally, the Sensors and Actuators division provides solutions for both industrial applications and for e-mobility. Beyond defense, Rheinmetall’s Material and Trade division plays a vital role, supplying plain bearings, structural components and overseeing the global aftermarket business. The company has fine-tuned its strategy to achieve CO2 neutrality by 2035.
