The environment and waste management industry in Munich has significantly diversified over the course of the last decade in the lead-up to Germany’s strict and uncompromising net zero goals. The sector, which intersects with numerous high-tech fields and benefits from extensive scientific research, is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic in the region. In 2017, approximately 90,000 people were employed in Munich’s environmental sector. By 2022, this number had gone up to 119,000, which speaks to the added economic value by the sector. The sector's gross value added reached an impressive €10.75 billion. Munich's environmental economy is diverse, with several key areas leading the way. Recycling management and circular economy represents 29% of employment in the sector, with around 1,900 companies. Munich’s approach to recycling and circular economy practices ensures the efficient use of resources and the reduction of waste. Then there’s environmentally friendly mobility. With a 24% share of employment and approximately 500 companies, this area focuses on sustainable transportation solutions. Munich is at the forefront of developing and implementing green mobility technologies. Accounting for 19% of employment and around 2,500 companies, the energy efficiency submarket is crucial. Innovations in this area include energy-saving technologies and efficient energy conversion methods. The Munich Urban Colab, a hub for sustainable start-ups, plays a vital role in fostering innovation. Between 2013 and 2022, around 980 start-ups were founded in the region, with 60% focusing on energy efficiency, environmentally friendly energy conversion, and sustainable transportation. This start-up ecosystem is driving significant advancements in green technologies and practices. Munich also hosts some of the world’s most prestigious trade fairs such as Intersolar Europe (the world's largest trade fair for the solar industry) and IFAT (the leading trade fair for water, waste, wastewater, and resource management). IFAT highlights cutting-edge technologies and practices in sustainable resource management.
