Germany’s electronics industry isn't just humming – it's booming. Recognized as a global leader in microelectronics production and research, Germany is the heart of Europe’s electronics market, both in terms of production and sales. Germany boasts an unparalleled density of R&D centers. From world-renowned research institutes to leading manufacturers and suppliers, the country offers a complete ecosystem for electrical and electronic innovation. This translates into a diverse range of products, which encompass everything from cutting-edge microchips to sophisticated medical equipment and reliable household appliances. The scale of the German electronics industry is impressive. It contributes 10% of the country’s domestic industrial output and a significant 3% to Germany's GDP. The industry is responsible for the employment of a massive work force – over 867,700 within Germany alone, with an additional 777,000 employed abroad. This makes it the second-largest industry branch in Germany as it accounts for 14% of the total workforce in the manufacturing sector. Germany heavily invests into electronics outside of production alone. The industry invests heavily in research and development, evidenced by the €19.7 billion dedicated to R&D annually. This represents 23% of the total R&D expenditure across all German industries. Furthermore, 30% of all R&D employees in Germany, a total of 114,000 individuals, are employed in pushing the boundaries of electronics technology. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a major driver of innovation within the German electronics industry. The technology offers immense potential across various sectors, from manufacturing and construction to retail and transportation. Recognizing this potential, German companies are poised to be major players in the IoT revolution. With a projected spend of over €35 billion by 2023, Germany is expected to become the biggest spender on IoT technology in Europe. Consequently, IoT-generated turnover within Germany is expected to double, reaching €45 billion by 2023.
