Switzerland builds on top of its expertise in the world of watchmaking and precision manufacturing to pull ahead in the micro and nano technologies industry. The canton of Neuchâtel is particularly associated with innovations within these particular fields. But how did this region become associated with precision mechanics, microelectronics, and MEMS (microelectromechanical systems)? We have to rewind four centuries to the 17th century when watchmaking became the top occupation for farmers during the winters. The tradition began with simple tool repair and progressed to a tradition that produced brands like Piaget, Zenith, and Parmigiani. This heritage laid the groundwork for what came during the technological boom within the late 20th century up until this point in history. Companies like Etel, Semtech and Melexis Technologies have established their home offices in Switzerland and currently lead the micro and nano technologies industry. Neuchâtel has assured its competitive edge by growing a dense network of academic and research institutions. Case in point - Microcity, the largest microtechnology competence center in Europe, which is located in the Watch Valley. Microcity hosts seven teaching and research institutions, 1,000 researchers, and state-of-the-art facilities. It’s also affiliated with the national “Switzerland Innovation” program and collaborates with other high-profile organizations like the Institute of Electrical and Micro Engineering at EPFL and the Swiss Foundation for Research in Microtechnology (FSRM). These partnerships ensure a steady pipeline of talent and groundbreaking research, with training programs covering precision positioning, micro-optics, and more. Adjacent to Microcity is the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM), a key player in bridging the gap between research and industry. Together, these institutions drive the region’s technological advancements and support its thriving industrial fabric. Lastly, we have to mention the Micronarc platform, which promotes scientific, technical and economic activities. Micronarc enhances the region’s global competitiveness.
