France has chosen to increase its investment into its defense sector as it continues to increase its budget in the coming years. This decision is driven by a number of factors, including the ongoing modernization of the French armed forces, the deterioration of European security following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the French government’s commitment to meeting its NATO defense spending obligations. According to the latest projections, France’s defense budget is expected to grow from $50.3 billion in 2022 to $68.0 billion by 2027. The bulk of this increase is expected to come from the acquisition budget. This reflects the scale of several current modernization initiatives, including the Scorpion armored vehicle program, the PANG aircraft carrier and the development of a new generation of SSBNs. The increase in the defense budget is also in line with the commitments made by the French government to NATO. As a member of the alliance, France is committed to spending at least 2% of its GDP on defense. The French government has met this commitment since 2020 and the increase in the defense budget is expected to help it to continue to meet this target in the years to come. The deterioration of European security following the Russian invasion of Ukraine is also likely to reinforce the trend of increasing defense spending in France. The conflict has highlighted the need for European countries to invest more in their defense capabilities in order to deter aggression and protect their security. France is a key member of NATO, and it is likely to play a leading role in any efforts to enhance European defense cooperation. This places France’s defense industry in the perfect position to expand. This includes plans to invest in new technologies and to develop a more robust domestic defense industrial base. This investment is expected to create new jobs and boost economic growth in France.
