In a bid to promote environmental responsibility and enhance animal welfare, France’s livestock-farming and meat sector has spearheaded initiatives in collaboration with major non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as WWF, FNE, WelFarm and CIWF. A pivotal moment for the animal industry in France came in 2017 when the livestock-farming and meat sector collectively endorsed the Social Responsibility Pact. Aligned with the ISO 26000 international standard, this pact is a two-fold undertaking focusing on environmental preservation and animal welfare. The first aspect revolves around environmental sustainability with an emphasis on the judicious use of non-renewable resources. Life Beef Carbon, an initiative joined by 2000 cattle farmers, aims to reduce the industry's carbon footprint by 15% before 2027. The second aspect of the pact addresses a topic close to the hearts of French consumers - animal welfare. Slaughterhouses are investing in much needed modernizations, outfitting facilities to be more ergonomic, comfortable and well-lit to prioritize the well-being of animals. Simultaneously, the industry is taking steps to encourage responsible and balanced consumption. Consumer labeling is becoming more comprehensive with packaged products now including information such as batch numbers, health-inspection stamps and details about the animal's place of birth, slaughter and butchering. Additionally, nutritional facts, cooking instructions and serving-size recommendations are increasingly provided. France stands out as a leader in the European beef production landscape, boasting the largest cattle inventory in the region with 18.6 million heads. The country annually exports 260,000 tons of carcass-weight equivalent, constituting 17% of its production. Renowned for its diverse cattle breeds, including Charolais, Blonde d'Aquitaine, and Limousin, France takes pride in the precision of its butchering, offering an impressive array of 34 different cuts of meat. As the French animal industry navigates these progressive trends, it sets a noteworthy example of sustainable practices and animal welfare prioritization for the global agricultural community.
