Digital technologies permeate the world of security and two technological trends, in particular, are making waves and reshaping the security and defense industry – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Additive Manufacturing. Together they offer state-of-the-art solutions that improve every aspect of security from efficiency to cost reductions, truly transforming military operations and defense work on every level. AI plays a pivotal role in various aspects of military operations. From autonomous weapons and vehicle systems to real-time data analysis for command and control, AI is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in security. Autonomous weapons and vehicles powered by AI are already in use and pave the way for crewless military operations. What we’ll see in the future is a battlefield without soldiers as AI-driven technologies minimize casualties. There are practically no limits to what AI can achieve. Applications include predictive maintenance (forecasting equipment failure, optimizing maintenance schedules), cybersecurity (detecting and mitigating cyber threats), military training (AI-driven simulations and virtual environments enhance the training of military personnel) and decision support. Here AI is employed as an aid on decision-making processes to ensure strategic and tactical advantages. Additive Manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, is making significant strides in the defense and security sector as it offers versatile applications that enhance agility. The technology has found numerous applications such as replacing obsolete parts. 3D printing allows for the rapid production of vehicle and aircraft parts, reducing costs and speeding up the manufacturing process. In recent years, additive manufacturing has been scaled up to help with construction of bridges and shelters to name a few. Additive manufacturing accelerates design and construction processes, minimizing labor requirements. Given that 3D-printed components are lightweight, there’s a big reduction in weight, which then also leads to cost effectiveness. The heavier equipment is the more energy is needed for its relocation, thus inflating costs.
