According to recent market research, Spain’s packing and packaging sector is expected to steadily grow through 2027, with rigid plastics remaining the biggest earner. In 2022, rigid plastics held the largest market share, followed by flexible packaging and glass. Rigid plastics are a preferred material due to their cost efficiency and lightweight properties, which means easy transportation and storage. That might be all and good, but concerns over plastic waste have already kicked off a process towards adopting more paper and board packaging as sustainability becomes a priority for the industry on a global scale. The food sector remains the most significant consumer of packaging materials in Spain, accounting for over 52% of total market usage in 2022. Within this segment, rigid plastics and flexible packaging are the most widely used materials, particularly in dairy, meat, and deli products. The preference for these materials is largely due to their ability to ensure product safety and prolong shelf life. Beverages, cosmetics, and toiletries also represent substantial portions of the market. Glass packaging, in particular, continues to be a mainstay in the alcoholic beverages industry, while flexible and rigid plastics are heavily utilized in personal care and household products. The future of the packing and packaging sector in Spain is deeply entwined with sustainability. As regulatory pressures mount and consumer awareness grows, companies have no other choice but to opt for environmentally friendly packaging solutions. Spain is adapting to meet new circular economy regulations, which promote recycling, reuse, and responsible material sourcing. Key trends include the shift toward mono-materials, biodegradable raw materials, and higher recycled content in packaging. Additionally, regulatory measures such as taxes on non-reusable plastic packaging and the development of collective extended responsibility systems are pushing companies to rethink their approaches.
