Spain’s refrigeration industry has shown impressive growth potential as it adapts to one of the most challenging landscapes. On one hand, energy costs are rising, while, on the other, there’s a lot of adapting to do in order to meet the European Union’s energy efficiency standards. So what we’re seeing is nothing short of spectactular. Let’s look at the regulatory environment that Spain has to adapt to. The European Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2024 and the European Energy Labeling Regulation 2019/2018 have placed energy efficiency at the forefront of the refrigeration industry's agenda. Manufacturers of refrigeration equipment and systems are responding by prioritizing the development of high-performance equipment that minimizes energy consumption while remaining environmentally friendly. This focus on energy efficiency is crucial across the entire cold chain, particularly for refrigerated cabinets, which are prevalent in supermarkets, butcher shops, and other establishments. The energy efficiency of these cabinets significantly impacts the overall energy performance of the entire complex. Spanish companies, like Intersam, are actively implementing technologies such as electronic fans and valves, incorporating doors to limit the opening of refrigerated environments, and adopting LED lighting. These improvements, coupled with the introduction of new refrigerants with low global warming potential, are aimed at reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact. The new European regulation sets forth ecological design and energy labeling requirements for refrigeration equipment and systems used for direct sales and connected to the electrical network. This includes refrigerated cabinets for supermarkets, beverage refrigerators, ice cream display cabinets, chests for ice cream preservation and sale, and refrigerated vending machines. The Spanish refrigeration industry has been proactive in preparing for these regulations, with many companies investing in the research, design, and production of energy-efficient products for several years. This proactive approach has positioned the sector to adapt smoothly to the new standards and maintain its competitive edge.
