The United Kingdom livestock and poultry industry have gone through numerous permutations and stages of development. Today, you see everything from traditional hill farming to cutting-edge dairy and poultry production. Right now, the industry is amidst another dramatic transformation due to the large-scale effects of climate change as well as push towards sustainable practices. Thankfully, the UK’s livestock industry is agile and adaptive thanks to its diverse makeup as there are farms specializing in sheep farming in hilly terrains, lowland dairy and beef production, and pig and poultry farming. However, what’s key to take notice of is the prioritization of innovation whether it’s from emerging SMEs or established giants. The UK boasts a robust research base in animal and veterinary sciences, housing world leaders in these fields. Livestock farming uses a significant portion of land in the country so it’s natural that it needs to do the most to address climate change and ensure global food security in the same breath – large undertaking. The UK has set ambitious goals, aiming for Net Zero emissions by 2050 to combat climate change. Achieving this target necessitates urgent actions and strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Extreme weather events linked to climate change pose risks to farmers and the need for sustainable farming practices is felt urgently. Livestock farming contributes to GHG emissions, particularly methane from digestive processes, manure decomposition and nitrous oxide from fertilizers. It’s also important to note that it’s the ruminant livestock that generate the higher carbon footprint. The industry seeks solutions within its operations, including soil carbon capture, hedgerow planting and tree cultivation. Achieving Net Zero targets requires a collaborative effort across the supply chain. Policymakers, researchers and consumers must align their actions to support the industry's transformation. The journey must involve reducing negative impacts and also embracing new production and farming methods.
