The UAE has long strategized on how to diversify its economy and loosen its dependency on oil production and a new national vision has emerged; one where strategic government initiatives and foreign investment transform the UAE into a scientific oasis in the Middle East. We’re already seeing the fruits of this labor with the emergence of a world-class healthcare infrastructure and a budding ecosystem for scientific innovation. The life sciences industry in the UAE, which took root approximately 25 years ago, has witnessed substantial growth, primarily driven by the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. The UAE government has proactively implemented policies and programs aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare and laboratory testing services, with a clear ambition to become a global leader in pharmaceuticals and medical research and development. The UAE has already laid the groundwork for numerous medical research and development centers across the country and exerts a focused effort to attract international pharmaceutical companies to set up and expand their operations within the UAE. The nation's strategic location, sophisticated logistics infrastructure, and the creation of specialized free zones have further increased its appeal. Currently, over 420 life sciences companies operate within the UAE. The longevity market in the UAE is of particular interest given the increasing percentage of the aging population and was valued at over $19 billion in 2020. Projections indicate that the market can reach $32 billion by 2026. This growth is primarily driven by increasing domestic demand, a rising export market, and strong government support for all stakeholders, from multinational pharmaceutical corporations to biotech startups. In this regard, the country has become a leading example for the region's longevity sector.
