Sustainability and green energy are the next stage for Dubai’s energy industry – a transformation that kicked into high gear with the announced of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which is the brain child of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The plan breaks down in great detail how Dubai will become an expansive oasis hub for renewable energy and sustainable development. Central to this strategy is the ambitious goal of having solar panels on the roofs of all buildings in Dubai by 2030. The city will invest billions of dollars to achieve this, marking a significant shift towards clean energy. The strategy sets incremental targets for clean energy adoption: 7% by 2020, 25% by 2030, and 75% by 2050. Crucial to the success of Dubai’s clean energy efforts is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest solar park of its kind globally. With an investment of Dh50 billion, the park aims to produce 5,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030, contributing significantly to the emirate’s power needs. By 2030, solar energy is expected to account for 25% of Dubai's power requirements, with nuclear energy, clean coal, and gas sitting at 7%, 7%, and 61% respectively. Sheikh Mohammed also announced the creation of the Dubai Green Zone, a new free zone dedicated to attracting research and development centers and emerging companies in the clean energy sector. This initiative underscores Dubai's commitment to becoming a global center for green energy innovation. To support this vision, the emirate will establish a Dh100 billion Dubai Green Fund, designed to provide easy loans to investors in the clean energy sector at lower interest rates. This financial incentive is aimed at spurring investment and accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.
