The waste management industry has found solid footing and fertile ground to expand in Italy, which has pulled ahead other European Union’s nations in recycling and waste management, boasting impressive recycling rates and modern waste-handling facilities. Italy is recognized as an eager recycler, with some of the highest recycling rates in the EU. In 2021, at least 51.3% of municipal waste was recycled, while 79% of all collected waste underwent recycling processes. These figures have risen steadily since the 2010s. Local waste-handling organizations play a crucial role in maintaining these numbers. Plastic recycling, in particular, is a strong point in Italy’s recycling industry. The country’s facilities are equipped to handle various types of plastics, including PET, HDPE, PDPE, and mixed plastics. Modern separation processes ensure that plastic waste is repurposed efficiently, reducing environmental impact and contributing to the sustainability goals set by both the EU and local authorities. Despite these successes, Italy faces significant challenges in waste management. The growing influx of tourists adds to the country’s waste output, increasing the need for efficient collection and processing systems.
