Изложения в Milan, Italy за Околна среда и отпадъци

Milan is the perfect example of the successes a big city can achieve in the environment and waste management industry. The city has transformed its waste management practices and emerged as a case study for successful separate waste collection in large cities. With a population of 1.4 million densely packed into high-rise buildings, achieving efficient waste management in Milan posed a significant challenge. However, the city has risen to the occasion, particularly excelling in food waste collection. Back in 2011, Milan's food waste collection rate was 35%, despite several promising examples of separate waste collection in smaller cities. Recognizing the need for improvement, the new municipal government, elected in 2011, decided to implement a comprehensive and ambitious separate collection scheme with a keen focus on organic waste. The transformation began with meticulous planning and piloting. Two pilot projects were conducted in 2008 and 2010 to test the feasibility of the new food waste collection system. These pilots were crucial for training workers and educating citizens about the importance and methods of separate waste collection. Following these successful pilots, the full-scale implementation began. The comprehensive plan designed by Milan’s waste management company, AMSA, included key logistical details for waste collection, a communication campaign, and the distribution of necessary kits—bins, bags, and instructional materials—to households and businesses. The implementation phase officially started in November 2012, marked by a two-month communication blitz involving leaflets, posters, and face-to-face interactions with residents to ensure widespread awareness and participation. Over the next two years, the new system was rolled out across the city in four quadrants, each housing around 300,000 inhabitants. By 2019, the city was collecting 110 kilograms of food waste per inhabitant, a significant leap from the 28 kilograms per inhabitant in 2011, marking a new era for the environment and waste management industry in Milan.
