The city of Amsterdam continues to play a critical role in the Netherlands’ thriving shipping and trade ecosystem. Despite the Netherlands’ relatively small geographic size, it punches well above its weight in global trade, exporting goods worth US$692.8 billion in 2021. This achievement ranked the country as the sixth-largest exporter in the world. The Port of Amsterdam also ranks among Western Europe’s top five seaports. The port benefits from its strategic location and connectivity as it offers easy access to key European markets. As a result, it handles 100 million tonnes of cargo annually, making it not only a vital node in European logistics but also a global player in international shipping. The Port of Amsterdam is a multifunctional facility, handling a wide range of cargo types including breakbulk, container shipments, agricultural goods, machinery, and oil. This flexibility allows the port to support the complex demands of modern trade and adapt to shifting economic trends and trade routes. With three types of terminals catering to different cargo needs, the port is well-equipped to accommodate the evolving logistics landscape. A substantial portion of the Netherlands’ exports (74.8%) are destined for fellow European nations, with Germany receiving 22.8% of total exports. This reflects the country’s deep integration with the EU market. However, Amsterdam’s reach extends far beyond Europe. Goods from the Dutch capital also flow steadily to Asia (12.6%) and North America (6.3%). To streamline trade, the Dutch government has implemented a highly efficient customs framework. The Tax and Customs Administration oversees the import, export, and transit of goods, operating through the AGS (Automated Customs System). This single electronic declaration system ensures smooth processing and regulatory compliance, a key advantage for international shippers. Additionally, Amsterdam’s robust freight and logistics industry plays a pivotal role in supporting the country's exports.
