China has solidified its position as the world's largest producer and consumer of synthetic rubber, playing a crucial role in global supply chains. The country's synthetic rubber manufacturing industry generated $29.2 billion in revenue in 2024, which marked a 6.9% increase from the previous year. Over the past five years, the sector has expanded at an annualized rate of 7.2%, driven primarily by the booming automobile manufacturing industry, which remains a key consumer of synthetic rubber for tire production. China's synthetic rubber output reached 9.4 million tons in 2024, while exports from the industry totaled $1.9 billion, accounting for 6.5% of total industry revenue. Meanwhile, imports hit $8.7 billion, fulfilling 24.1% of domestic demand—down from 26.6% in 2019. This trend suggests an increasing shift toward domestic production to meet the nation's growing needs. Despite the overall market expansion, the number of industry enterprises has declined at an annualized rate of 1.0%, which brought the total to 330 companies in 2024. This contraction is mainly due to government policies aimed at reducing excess production capacity and enforcing stricter environmental regulations. Moving forward, industry entry barriers are expected to rise as technological advancements and sustainability standards demand higher product performance. Industry revenue is forecast to grow at an annualized rate of 4.5% over the next five years, reaching an estimated $36.4 billion by 2029. As demand from the automobile manufacturing sector continues to rise, companies are expected to invest in high-end synthetic rubber production to meet stringent environmental regulations and performance expectations. Higher standards for tire exports will further accelerate this shift, fostering innovation and improved product quality. China remains the dominant producer of synthetic rubber and contributed to global supply chains with an output of 9.4 million tons in 2024. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and butadiene rubber (BR) are the leading product categories.
