Nestled in the province of Luxembourg, Belgium, lies the municipality of Libramont-Chevigny. Despite Flanders being the main agricultural hub in the country, this region has earned its place as a significant part of the country’s agricultural landscape through the preservation of traditional farming and rural life. Libramont-Chevigny is not just any municipality; it is one of the largest in Belgium, ranking fifth in the nation and fourth within the Walloon Region. Its vast expanse stretches across one of Belgium's five Ardennes plateaus, lending it a unique topographical character. Of course, this key location contributes to its agricultural significance. Libramont-Chevigny is often referred to as the ‘crossroads of rural life.’ The reason being that agriculture is a way of life. Agriculture is deeply ingrained in the community's identity and it’s best seen through the long-running agricultural and forest fair in Libramont. The fair, held every July, draws more than 200,000 visitors over four days. Located at the heart of Libramont, the fair unfolds on the largest expanse of land without fixed constructions in urban territory throughout Europe. The fair is as much an opportunity for farmers and manufacturers to conduct business as it is a celebration of rural life that gathers rural communities together. There are also additional events tagged to the main event. Once every two years, the fair extends its scope to include forestry, adding two more days of festivities. And every four years, the fair extends its run by an extra day to host the International Weed Day in Bras-Haut. This unique event showcases the latest agricultural technologies in real-life settings, allowing farmers and enthusiasts to witness firsthand the innovations that will shape the future of farming. In a rapidly changing world, Libramont-Chevigny remains a steadfast guardian of rural traditions and a beacon of innovation in agriculture.
